The experience
After hotel pick-up, you’ll travel about an hour to an eco-tourism farm in Mahates, near San Basilio de Palenque, while your guide shares the region’s history from the colonial era to today. You’re welcomed with a drink and a fruit salad, then — after an assessment and instructions — set off for a 2-to-3-hour ride (depending on experience).
You’ll see the region’s farming and cattle systems and enter a natural reserve home to more than 200 species of birds, mammals and reptiles typical of the tropical dry forest. Finishing around midday, a 15-minute transfer takes you to San Basilio de Palenque for lunch made with the town’s typical ingredients and recipes.
